Accessibility Tips

Shoe Sensation uses design standards that help guests interact with the information presented on our websites and mobile apps. Below are some tips that may come in handy when accessing Shoe Sensation’s website and mobile applications.

  1. Software recommendations and settings
    • We recommend using current versions of the manufacturer’s assistive technology applications, along with the current version of your computer/mobile device operating system and browser of choice. We suggest experimenting with different types of browsers and assistive technology applications to determine which combination works best for you.
    • We support screen magnification technologies and accessibility features – like zoom, color and other image controls – that major browsers and computer/mobile device operating systems provide.
  2. Screen reader applications
    • For the best online experience, we recommend the following screen reader applications for customers with vision disabilities: JAWS, VoiceOver and NVDA. On mobile devices, we recommend TalkBack for Android devices and Voice-Over for the iPhone and iPad.
    • If you use JAWS as your screen reader, we recommend using it with Chrome or Edge; if you use NVDA as your screen reader, we recommend using it with Chrome or FireFox.
  3. Assistive Technology Applications
Check out these features and settings available in various assistive technology applications:
    • Tooltips – Enable settings to read tooltips if it’s required by your screen-reading application. This additional information can be very beneficial for comprehending and interacting with the content on many pages.
    • Special characters – If it’s required by your screen-reading application, enable settings to automatically read any of these special characters: at sign (@), number sign (#), dollar sign ($), ampersand (&), apostrophe, quotation marks, backslash, bar (|), underline, braces({}), brackets ([]) and words with tilde- or grave-accented characters.
    • Symbols – If it’s required by your screen reading application, enable settings to automatically read these symbols: plus, minus (may be pronounced “dash”), asterisk (may be pronounced “star”), forward slash, percent sign (%), caret (^), equals sign, parentheses, the less-than symbol (<) and the greater-than symbol (>).
    • Browser status information – Links may contain additional information on the status line in the bottom left of your browser window. Consider using your screen reader application's hot keys to read this information when you are focused on a link.
    • Manual focus for mouse – You can hear additional information about elements on web pages by causing the mouse pointer to focus on the next element and read all available information associated with that element. If your screen reader application provides this functionality, consider using hot-key keystrokes to trigger reading this information.

Also, be sure to check the help directories or user guides of your specific software for information about other features you may find useful.

  4. Browsers
    • It’s advisable to download a current version of Edge, Safari, Firefox or Chrome.
    • There are easy-to-use browser controls for adjusting the size and colors of content on a web page. There are no ideal content size or color combinations for all people. By using the controls provided in browsers, you can personalize the content presentation in your browser. We’ve designed the web content we provide to work with these controls.
    • Adjusting text size
      • Browsers typically provide two controls for adjusting the size of text (fonts) on a web page: Text Size and Zoom.
      • Text or font size adjustmentsonly change the size of text on a web page. You may be more limited in terms of the range of user control with text size than with Zoom. Browser text size adjustments may not change the size of text in videos. Zoom adjustments enlarge or reduce the size of all page content.
      • For Edge, controls for text size are under Settings > Appearance > Fonts.
      • For Firefox, controls for text size are on the View > Zoom menu. In some versions, holding both the “Ctrl” and “Shift” keys and pressing the “+” or “-” keys will also change the text size.
      • For Chrome, text size controls are on the Settings page. To find it, choose the wrench or bars icon in the upper-right corner of the browser window to open the Customize menu and choose “Settings.” At the bottom of the Settings page, choose “Show advanced settings...” and then scroll down to the “Web content” section.
      • For Safari, controls for text size are on the View menu. To change just the text size, check the Zoom Text Only option, and then choose the Zoom In or Zoom Out options. Once you’ve checked “Zoom Text Only,” you can also change the text size by holding the Command key down and pressing the “+” or “-” keys.
    • Adjusting size of all content: To change the size of images, buttons, text and all the content shown on a web page, use the Zoom controls:
      • For Edge, zoom controls are on the Settings > Zoom menu. In some versions for a PC, you can also adjust the zoom level by holding the “Ctrl” key and pressing the “+” or “-” keys.
      • For Firefox, zoom controls are on the View > Zoom menu. In some versions for a PC, you can also change the zoom level by holding the “Ctrl” key down and pressing the “+” or “-” keys.
      • For Chrome, zoom controls are on the Customize menu. To open this menu, choose the wrench or bars icon in the upper-right corner of the browser window. You can also find zoom controls on the Settings page. To find it, choose the wrench or bars icon in the upper-right corner of the browser window to open the Customize menu and choose “Settings.” At the bottom of the Settings page, choose “Show advanced settings...” and then scroll down to the “Web content” section. In some versions for a PC, you can also change the zoom level by holding the “Ctrl” key down and pressing the “+” or “-” keys.
      • For Safari, zoom controls are on the View menu. To change the size of all content, make sure you haven’t checked the Zoom Text Only, then choose the Zoom In or Zoom Out options. When you have the Zoom Text Only option unchecked, you can also change the zoom level by holding the Command key down and pressing the “+” or “-” keys.
    • Adjusting colors: Two common techniques for changing the display of colors are settings that adjust text, background and link colors and a setting to “ignore colors.” You may need to use both techniques.
      • Edge: You aren't able to adjust colors for Edge
      • Firefox, ignore colors:
        • Open the Tools menu, and then choose “Options.”

        • Choose “OK” in the Colors window.
        • Choose “OK” in the Options window.
        • Keep in mind: When you make this change, you’re also removing background images.
      • Firefox, adjust selected colors: You can change colors for text, background, links and visited links in the Colors window. To adjust these colors, first follow Firefox’s “ignore colors” instructions. Then:
          • Open the Tools menu, and then choose “Options.”
